Temporal city-scale matching of solar photovoltaic generation and electric vehicle charging

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) and solar photovoltaic panels (PVs) are rapidly increasing in many power grids. An important emerging challenge is managing their less desirable consequences (e.g. grid instability and peak load), particularly urban environments. We present a solution that matches the temporal nature PV generation EV charging. This simple coordination strategy for charging which minimally affects availability drivers while maximizing PV electricity generation absorbed by batteries. The benchmarked with high-resolution data from medium-sized European city. find this coordination provides large benefits compared to commonly-observed uncoordinated patterns across seasons integration levels. With coordination, almost 71%–92% charging load can be provided summer. However, winter’s lower irradiance results a larger range possibilities (13%–76%), exact value depending on combination EV integration level. gains generally highest winter similarly vary based levels (from 5 63 percentage points). Additionally, these do not appear come at significant cost drivers.
